Some of the countries require academic Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) to support your Master degree’s application. It should emphasis more on your academic achievements.

The rules for writing an academic resume or CV are slightly different from that of professional one, but purpose remains the same, that is, to showcase your abilities and achievements to justify the biggest question ‘Why should we take you’?

It's important to take it a step further and tailor your CV. Following guidelines will help you prepare just the right resume so it stands out amongst other applicants.

This document is a summary of your major accomplishments over the course of several years, and you should present it carefully to make sure it reflects your accomplishments in the best possible light for each particular program. It should include the following -

  • Personal details and contact details
  • Academic qualifications (as per chronological order)

    Different universities have different criteria. Some require either a resume or some might ask you to prepare your CV, depending on what type of master’s program you’re applying to.

    The primary differences are the length, the content and the purpose.

  • A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education whereas a CV, is a longer (two or more pages), more detailed synopsis.
  • A goal of resume writing is to be brief and concise since where as CV includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details.
  • Emphasize Over Your Academics

    Since its academic resume or CV, it should emphasize over your academic achievements and not professional achievements. With the post-graduate resume, the purpose is to demonstrate advanced ability and a high level of accomplishment.

  • The most recent study should predominate. Only points relevant to your application (i.e. the course you are applying for) should be included with your qualifications. Detail all the courses you have studied during your degree by year and give grades (if they are good!).
  • Include details of any projects, extended essays or dissertations you have done - especially if the subject area was related to the study area you are applying to. If you have any relevant interests, put them in.
  • Internships and Extracurricular Activities

  • You can list your internship experiences to showcase practical knowledge of what you have learnt.
  • Write down about your extracurricular activities or volunteer work. This will let admissions officers know about your personal passions and even your leadership experience. Try linking you skills with your activities.
  • These accomplishments refer to your interests while demonstrating that you’re willing to work hard for reasons other than immediate material rewards.
  • Language and Vocabulary

    With right vocabulary and good usage of language, you can embellish your resume or CV. Think about the language you use, and choose words carefully to convey as much as you can about your accomplishments in concise manner.

    Use action verbs to showcase your skills. For example, action verbs like co-authored, managed, oversaw, coordinated, taught, trained, investigated, etc can be used to mention skills involving authorship, collaboration, learning, leadership, and project management.

    Additional tips

  • There should be no unnecessary detail in the CV. Every point you make should count.
  • Give evidence. Don't make general statements such as "I am a determined and numerate person with good communication skills" - show how you have demonstrated these qualities in your work, study or extra-curricular activities.
